AVSL Round 2  2024

We stepped up in Round 2, finishing 8th out of 11 teams and scoring much higher than in Round 1. Once again, our squad of Lachlans hauled in nearly a quarter of the total team score, and we eagerly await the arrival of a couple more Lachies after school athletics wraps up. Most of our athletes competed at Glenhuntly, supported by some excellent performances from our quintet at Doncaster, where we believe Lara, Sophie, and Tom may have all run personal bests.

At Glenhuntly, Will Katic won the first heat of the 800 (earning 433 points), following in the footsteps of Will BJ, who won the first heat of the 100 last week. Both were very impressive performances. Are there any more Wills out there? Phoebe Grant came within a whisker of joining the 400-Point Club, while Lachy Gance, Will Byrne-Jones, Sophie Senior, and Henry Dawborn all scored huge points in their events. Sprinters at Glenhuntly once again had to battle a tough headwind—if anyone can arrange for a tailwind, it would be greatly appreciated!

In our only field event of the day, Hando threw a PB in shot put, and Lachie Stewart showed he could throw farther than he can long jump. More field event participants would be most welcome—they can earn just as many points as those on the track.

A big thanks to our latest lap scorer, Mikey Simm, at Glenhuntly.

Best wishes to the Scotch Athletics team, led by Rory Vial and Elden Zeng, for their APS competition on Saturday at Lakeside, as they strive to go one better than last year’s second place.

Let me know if you’d like further adjustments!⬤

Athlete of the Week
Round 2  honours for Athlete of the Week  go to Will Katic for his bold front running in clearly winning Heat 1 of the 800m and becoming our first 400 plus pointer for the season. We reckon training partner Phoebe won’t be far behind in future weeks.

Upcoming Events
After a cabinet meeting on Saturday it was determined that most athletes for Round 3 AVSL on Sat 19 October will be at the Keilor venue (100m,400m,1500m program) while some might venture to altitude at Mt Evelyn for the alternative program.
There will be no AVSL for the following two weekends (26 Oct and 2 November) due to the Vic All Schools competition which will feature many of our younger athletes.  AVSL will resume for Round 4 on Sat 9 November

Milers Club dates have now been released with first meet (3000m) scheduled for 14 November at Lakeside.  High Velocity dates should be out soon.
And please remember that the Vic Relay Championships are scheduled for the weekend of 23-24 November and athletes wishing to be part of the action should make their interest known so that the Club can enter competitive teams in all mens and womens age groups.

Training
Training continues with our various groups usually around the Righetti Oval area on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please sing out if you are not a regular with these groups but wish to be part of the fun.

Some Requirements
Athletes are reminded to enter AVSL  events on the AV website no later than noon on the Wednesday prior (need to be much earlier to gain a field games berth) and then to check-in via the AV Results Hub site at least an hour before your event. This now applies to every track and field event.
Our athletes should wear red singlets with their AV bib number attached. If you have not received your bib in the mail it will likely be at the venue at which you will compete.

Old Scotch is often required to provide club helpers for various duties e.g. help at the long jump or shot put and to lap score our athletes in distance events.  Please come to the party if you can assist when requested.

The NEW OSAC UNIFORM SHOP is now OPEN

Check it out at: https://pacificteamsports.com/collections/old-scotch-athletic-club

The Old Scotch Athletic Club is proud to unveil our brand-new uniform line for the 2024/25 season!  In collaboration with Nike and pacificteamsports, we’re bringing you style, comfort, and performance both on and off the track. The new uniforms are made from premium materials and can be purchased NOW for a very reasonable price.

The new line includes updated running singlets with Nike Dri-FIT material; brand-new half tights, bike shorts, and women’s briefs; brand-new long and short sleeve training/warm-up tops; a brand-new hoodie; a brand-new zip-up jacket; and brand-new track pants/warm-up pants.

Nike currently does not stock running shorts, but they will be available mid-to-late next year. Red shorts can still be purchased from Ian Handasyde on 0412 936 816.

We’d also like to emphasise that many of these items are optional, and previous versions of the uniform can still be worn. However, we request that new members purchase a singlet/women’s cover top and a navy or red pair of shorts, tights, or briefs.

The Definitive Guide to Summer Track & Field

Everything you need to know from our resident expert coach, Gregor Evans…

This is a brief guide to how the Athletics Victoria system works.

The Summer Track and Field season can be seen as two components – Club based and individual based…
The first is the Club competition season consisting of 10 rounds of AVSL (Athletics Victoria Shield League) starting early October and finishing in late February.  Every Old Scotch athlete who competes in any event scores points based on the age of the athlete and their performance. We encourage all our athletes to enter their main event plus one or two other events to help score as many club points as possible. (e.g a sprinter might enter a 100m, a 400m and a high jump one day, and a 200m a long jump and a shot put on the following week.  A distance runner might run an 800m and a 3000m and a discus throw for fun).  Each round of AVSL is conducted at two metropolitan venues with one venue offering 100m, 400m, 1500m and field events and the other venue offering 200m, 800m, 3000m and the other field events.  Old Scotch usually nominates one venue as its base each week but athletes may compete at either venue.   Our aim is to score as many points as possible and finish ahead of the other Clubs in our division.   To compete in a round of AVSL an athlete must firstly be registered with AV (base membership plus T&F Package) and then must enter events via the AV website before noon on the Wednesday prior to the Saturday competition.

Another Club based competition is the Victorian Relay Championships scheduled for 23/24 November and at which we have had very good representation in U16, U18 and Open age groups in recent years.
At Victorian Championships in late February athletes compete as individuals registered with Old Scotch and these are an excellent opportunity to gain experience and hopefully perform at personal best level under championship conditions.  AV also offer specialist midweek evening competitions throughout the season;  one for sprinters/hurdlers/long jumpers called High Velocity Meets and the other for distance runners called Vic Milers Club meets.  Athletes compete as individuals at these meets against athletes of comparable ability regardless of age and the purpose is to perform as well as possible.  No club points are involved.  The dates for these meetings are listed on the AV calendar and there is an entry fee to be paid about 4-5 days prior to the event.  Many of our athletes have done personal bests at these meetings.

Upcoming events and entry dates and times are published in the Club emails and social media.  Training and coaching is offered throughout the season from October to the end of March.

Summer Survival Guide

Please ensure you are correctly registered with AV.  If you don’t have your new AV bib it will most likely be available at the venue.

All registrations and event entries must be finalised online before noon on the Wednesday prior to competition.

Correct OS Athletic Club uniform is required (red singlet, crop or cover top and red or navy blue shorts/bike knicks/briefs).

When you enter an event, please submit a realistic estimate of your expected time so that you are allocated an appropriate heat.   Then ensure, for ALL events, that you check-in online via the AV Results Hub at least ONE hour before the event.

We will have access to fewer athletes for the first three rounds due to school commitments so we would love any available athletes to enter 2 or 3 events so we can try to score up around 7000 points to be competitive.
