APS T&F and AVSL Round 3

*** SCOTCH FINISH 2ND at APS ***

Huge congratulations to the Scotch Athletic team led by Captain Rory Vial and Vice Captain Elden Zeng for their APS result on Saturday at Lakeside finishing in second place just 6 points behind Melbourne Grammar. Many of our Club athletes had outstanding results including wins to Conor Sullivan (3000m), Bart Leeton (1500m), James Hall (800m and 1500m sensational),Sam Allen (High Jump), Henry Curlewis (1500m) and Lachie Gumley (Discus).

*** AVSL ROUND 3 ***

AVSL Round 3 2024

On a day when many of our athletes and supporters were at Lakeside at the APS Sports, others ventured far and wide mostly to the flight path of West Keilor and a couple to Mount Evelyn to keep the flag waving. We again performed most admirably with 4 personal bests (Will Byrne-Jones 400m, Henry Dawborn in both 100m and 400m and a whopping 5 sec 1500m PB to Luke Bodle.) We welcomed James Crilly to Old Scotch and loved his debut 1500m. We reckon in a fast red singlet he will go under 5 minutes very soon. Will Byrne-Jones took the honours of highest event score for the day with 412 points in his 100m as he again ran tantalisingly close to sub 11 while, as we predicted last week, Phoebe Grant was close on his tail with 409 points in her 1500m to earn her membership of the 400 club. Pete Simm looked very impressive, and a trifle surprised, to find himself leaving others in his wake clearly winning his 1500 reminiscent of 20 years ago. So, we are keeping a few clubs at bay while we await the return of our talented schoolboy squad for the next round on 9 November.

Athlete of the Week
The field of contenders was down a bit this week (due to the APS Sports, Caulfield Cup or Royal watching) so Henry Dawborn grabbed his chance to claim Athlete of the Week with excellent PBs in both 100m and 400m. Well earned Henry, the result of diligent training.  Honourable mentions go to Phoebe and Luke for their impressive high-scoring 1500m runs.

Upcoming Events
There will be no AVSL for the following two weekends (26 Oct and 2 November) due to the Vic All Schools competition which will feature many of our younger athletes.  AVSL will resume for Round 4 on Sat 9 November at Doncaster (200,800, triple jump etc program) and Glenhuntly (100,1500, long jump program). There appears to be no High Jump scheduled for either venue for Round 4.

Box Hill 31 Oct.  Distance event meeting.  Check AV website for details

Milers Club dates have now been released with first meet (3000m) scheduled for 14 November at Lakeside.  High Velocity dates should be out soon.
And please remember that the Vic Relay Championships are scheduled for the weekend of 23-24 November and athletes wishing to be part of the action should make their interest known so that the Club can enter competitive teams in all men’s and women’s age groups in events ranging from 4×100 up to 4×1500 and medley relays.

Training
Training continues with our various groups usually around the Righetti Oval area on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please sing out if you are not a regular with these groups but wish to be part of the fun.  Scotch schoolboys will train at Scotch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3.30pm.

Some Important Requirements
Athletes are reminded to enter AVSL events on the AV website no later than noon on the Wednesday prior (need to be much earlier to gain a field games berth) and then to check-in via the AV Results Hub site at least an hour before your event. This now applies to every track and field event.

Our athletes should wear red singlets with their AV bib number attached. If you have not received your bib in the mail, it will likely be at the venue at which you will compete.

Old Scotch is often required to provide club helpers for various duties e.g. help at the long jump or shot put and to lap score our athletes in distance events.  Please come to the party if you can assist when requested.
