AVSL Round 5 2024
A hot day and hot results. Our decision to utilise our PowerPlay paid off handsomely with an outstanding team contribution to finish in second place for the day. Let’s consider firstly how every little thing counts:
If Hando hadn’t returned from Cairns to do the walk, or
If Julian Li hadn’t ventured to Frankston to throw the shot, or
If James Rentschler hadn’t made a comeback and run a strong 100m
Then we would have finished third, and behind Old Xavs! So mighty congratulations and much appreciation to all who rallied to the call.
Pat Kroschel again set a hot pace in the point count hauling in 1230 points including a couple of PBs. Will Katic enjoyed the pace of the Frankston track to earn 472 points in his 800m in a nice lead up to Aust All Schools and Conor and Pat showed they are also in top shape for their All Schools campaign in early December. We welcomed Harrison Nunn, Will Sladen and Oliver Nunn to the Club and were super impressed with their performances. Nothing like some PBs in your debut to make a statement. Our support crew also loved the fighting finishes of James Crilly and Lachie Curlewis (both still in Y6) in their 1500m races where they refused to yield to older athletes.
So at the half way mark of the AVSL competition we find ourselves in the middle of the field in Div 4. And if we can have the same sort of commitment, plus a few more available athletes , for Round 6 on 30 November we will be well placed to finish off the season in 2025.
Congratulations to Conor Sullivan and Henry Dawborn, two of our very committed and high scoring athletes, who have been elected Captain and Vice Captain of the Scotch squad who participate in the Old Scotch Aths Club summer sport.

Athlete of the Week
Amassing nearly 2500 points in the last two rounds including a couple more PBs this week made the decision for Athlete of the Week for Pat Kroschel pretty straightforward for the selection committee. Fantastic efforts by Pat in his first two rounds of AVSL – fast looking a bit like a multi-eventer with big scores in all sprints, 400m hurdles and long jump. Exciting times for Pat as he prepares for Brisbane in December.

Training
Training continues with our various groups usually around the Righetti Oval area on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please sing out if you are not a regular with these groups but wish to be part of the fun. Scotch schoolboys will train at Scotch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3.30pm.
Some Important Requirements
We seem to be managing the AV requirements pretty well but gentle reminders:
Athletes are to enter AVSL events on the AV website no later than noon on the Wednesday prior (need to be much earlier to gain a field games berth) and then to check-in via the AV Results Hub site at least an hour before your event. This now applies to every track and field event.
Our athletes should wear red singlets with their AV bib number attached. If you have not received your bib in the mail it will likely be at the venue at which you will compete.
Old Scotch is often required to provide club helpers for various duties e.g. help at the long jump or shot put and to lap score our athletes in distance events. Please come to the party if you can assist when requested.
