AVSL Round 8 January 2025
Without the cattle it is difficult to run the dairy farm. Holidays, injuries and illness reduced our ranks to eight athletes across the Aberfeldie, Geelong and Mt Evelyn venues. They were eight mighty athletes but not quite enough of them as we finished in 8th position on the day (out of the 11 teams) and are settled in 7th position on the ladder but with a chance to climb a rung or two in the final two rounds. We think Aj ran a PB in his 1500m and Tom Roach and Lachie Stewart grabbed as many points as they could doing 3 events each. Jayden continued his fine form with a PB 200m and a strong 200m Hurdles as did Alex Latief who was our individual highest scorer of the day with 405 points for her long jump despite taking off 20cm before the board. Huge bonus points go to Julian Li (and his Mum) who left Hawthorn to travel to Aberfeldie for Julian’s shot put and then put in another 90 minutes or so driving to Mt Evelyn for Julian’s discus. That is commitment. Many thanks to all who had a crack in the hot conditions and to Sienna Keane who acted as our Club helper on the discus for the day. And it was nice to have a Scotch Junior School teacher pop over and have a chat about some of his former charges who are now competing with us.
Big congratulations to Hugo Stubbs who gained his National Qualifier in the 800m at the Sydney Milers during the week. 1.58.58 is very impressive. That racing haircut was enough to shave a bit off his PB. Nice work Hugo.

Athlete of the Week
Julian Li’s three hours on the road nearly earned him this week’s gong but the panel finally opted for Alex Latief as Athlete of the Week for her 100m and Long Jump which were our two highest point scoring events of the day. This, added to her 1000-point contribution last round, shows that Alex is an outstanding addition to our squad, and it will be exciting to see what she can achieve in a heptathlon later in the season. Not bad for a first season of athletics.

Vale Richard Piesse

It is with sadness we noted the recent passing of former OS athlete Richard Piesse. Richard was a talented tennis player who turned to running in the 1970s and was a regular in Old Scotch teams during this and the following decade. Richard was a strong contributor to Old Scotch and to APSOC both on and off the track and in recent years would often be seen at APSOC events catching up with old friends. In later life bushwalking was his passion and he managed the building of both the Lerderderg and Leanganook walking tracks. The Old Scotch Athletic Club extends our sympathy to the Piesse family.
